Anorthite

Anorthosite is a versatile and sustainable resource with applications across a range of industries. What Lumina produces is anorthite: the purest, most calcium-rich form of the mineral that makes up anorthosite — and the reason our material performs so consistently in demanding applications.

In e-glass production, anorthite offers superior electrical insulation with a reduced carbon footprint, meeting the growing demand for environmentally responsible materials in the aerospace, automotive and construction sectors.

In plastics, it enhances product performance by improving anti-block properties, UV stability, flame resistance and toughness — a durable and sustainable alternative to traditional additives.

It is also used in phenolic friction resins for brake systems, and as a greenspar in paints, where it increases durability and reduces emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Beyond terrestrial applications, Lumina's anorthite is a valuable resource for lunar studies. Its similarity to the material of the lunar highlands makes it central to academic research and simulation work, from lunar geology to the in-situ resource utilisation that future space missions will depend on.

All of it begins at Qaqortorsuaq in Western Greenland, where we mine and refine our anorthite to a range of grades and specifications, matched to what each customer's process requires. Low silica, high aluminium and calcium content, and no toxic by-products: it is a clean raw material, and it stays clean through the value chain.

Reducing emissions across industries

That matters beyond the products themselves. Replacing bauxite in alumina production, lowering the energy needed to make fibreglass, standing in for conventional fillers and cement materials — in each case our anorthite lets manufacturers use less energy, emit less carbon and avoid harmful by-products. From mine to end product, it is a shorter and cleaner path than the alternatives it replaces.
