Anorthite Solutions for a Changing World

Extreme Purity (XP) Anorthite

Our anorthite material from the Qaqortorsuaq mine in Western Greenland is widely regarded as the purest form of the mineral available on Earth. This unique form of the mineral is also regarded as the closest analog to the material which forms around 90% of regolith material on the surface of the moon.

This high calcium, low sodium and potassium compound of CaAl2Si208 material is unique in its properties as an analog to common moon regolith.  It also makes the QA anorthite an ideal additive in many hi-tech materials and processes including: glass and glass fibers, specialty polymers, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and hi-tech (specialty cements). It is on the Critical Minerals List in the European Union.

Applications

Anorthite is a versatile and unique material with applications across a range of industries ranging from space technologies to hi-tech commercial and industrial sectors. These include; aerospace, hi-tech polymers for defense and aeronautical applications, fire-retardant materials, premium paints, ceramics and specialty cements.

E-glass

In e-glass production, anorthite offers higher quality fiber output, energy reductions and increased process stability in manufacturing. Our clients are increasing substitution rates to improve overall processing performance. Separately, in the polymers and plastics areas, anorthite can be used to create an effective fire-retardant barrier to extinguish flame propagation risks in hi-tech materials as well as improving UV stability and higher durability.

Plastics

XP Anorthite additives improve the anti-block, UV stability, flame resistance, and toughness of plastics, offering a sustainable solution that bolsters the durability and functionality of plastic products while diminishing reliance on non-renewable resources.

Paints & Coatings

Other key applications include plastics and polymer materials, where anorthite enhances product performance by improving anti-block properties, UV stability, flame resistance and toughness — a durable alternative to other traditional additives.

Lunar Studies

Beyond terrestrial applications, Lumina's XP anorthite is currently being used by NASA and other Artemis Mission contractors to reliably test a whole range of equipment and materials for moon effectiveness and ware properties.  It has been classified by NASA as an accurate moon regolith analog for advanced testing and qualification of equipment bound for the moon’s surface. Both the chemical and physical characteristics of our A-16 lunar product meet completely the NASA specifications of the “Apollo 16 Recipe” based on moon regolith samples returned to earth by the moon mission in the 1970’s.

Mineral Wool

With its high aluminum and calcium content, XP Anorthite -based mineral wool provides excellent insulation with fewer impurities, perfect for energy-efficient building and industrial uses, thereby contributing to sustainability.
